Swahili Soul is a seven day educational retreat that fuses local culture using food, drink and music. We have curated a series of workshops and experiences that starts out in the capital Nairobi on the 8th of October and ending in Lamu Island. Our itinerary will impact your choices, how you spend both your time and money ensuring you leave a more sustainable impact within the local communities you visit. We have partnered with passionate, intentional individuals to bring you a one of a kind retreat that will leave you with a wealth of knowledge and a one of a kind experience as you enjoy this island paradise that is Lamu. During your time you will not only dig deep into local culture but leave with a wealth of knowledge we will be holding various workshops on ocean conservation, food, specialty coffee and art naming but a few of the exciting things lined up.

    A first community designed coffee educational session and Barista sessions that may mimic actual competitions but has an atmosphere of fun/mentorship for younger, less experienced Baristas from the region who will register and enter for an opportunity to learn and get some mentorship from more experienced Pro’s.

    All of this in Swahili - a first for the industry and a first for Lamu. Join us.

    The demonstration of a collaborative effort will hopefully provide the opportunity for all the community to engage and become aware of Swahili coffee culture, SCA, Education, Competitions to a greater community and employment opportunities for Lamu youth.

    The intention is to have a positive experience for all those involved experiencing the sense of belonging to the community, acting as a unifying force for the specialty coffee industry in Kenya, show the potential of growing a rich coffee culture in Lamu that can have a positive impact on the youth , culture and economy as a whole.

    This session will focus on the power of local brands KOllaborating and highlight some of their star brands - Purple Haze which is a partnership between KO and Muthaiga tea.

    During the workshop we will have the distiller and Kraft room mixologist run a gin n tea tasting session.

    This workshop will cover a variety of skills, tools, resources, and techniques both modern and ancient. Chef Joseph will work alongside local talent highlighting techniques, ingredients and culinary knowledge used in both West and East Africa in the hope that this knowledge will see the sustainable, endangered, healthy and climate friendly foods of our people re-introduced to everyone’s diet and culture.

    Growing native plants for food has a huge positive flow-on effect for biodiversity benefits, healthier waterways, socioeconomic gains, Indigenous Cultural pride and strength and a healthy landscape and diet for all people.

    Biodiversity and traditional knowledge extend beyond health and are intricately linked to natural resource management. Indigenous communities often have a deep understanding of their natural surroundings, the medicinal properties of various plants, and how the variety of plant and animal life supports food security, livelihoods, nutrition, and other dimensions of health and well-being. Biodiversity and traditional knowledge are foundational pillars of health and well-being and are essential to meeting the global commitments made under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) The workshop will provide a platform for dialogue, knowledge-sharing and capacity-strengthening among key stakeholders, including Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendants, civil society and other stakeholders .The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for traditional health practitioners and policymakers to learn from each other and develop recommendations.

    An Afro Fusion chef with lots of influence from his Ghanian roots. He was dubbed the top 5 chefs in Ghana and is one of Africa’s rising culinary stars. He is currently the head chef of restaurant momi in Amsterdam.

    Vava Angwenyi

    A sustainable farming advocate, author & business owner - she will be your host and steer the coffee workshops.
    Vava runs a social enterprise Vava coffee ltd. that exports, roasts & consults on coffee value chains. Her company was voted best for the world b-corp community honouree in 2019.
    She is also the co-founder gente del futuro & is behind the only specialty coffee school & cafe, la dulce toro in lamu town.

  • Nikita Shiel-Rolle

    Nikita Shiel-Rolle

    Oceanpreneur, conservation biologist & estate agent. Founder & Ceo of Young Marine explorers bahamas, Co-Founder Cat Island Conservation Institute. Nikita uses the power of the ocean love movement for social transformation. She will be running our ocean science workshops & youth ocean activities.

  • Harriet Chebet Ng’ok

    Harriet Chebet Ng’ok

    Founder, owner of Harriet’s botanicals - the health and wellness company making herbal medicines using ingredients sourced from forests across the Kenyan rural landscape. Ms.Ng’ok has a depth of knowledge in natural indigenous remedies and will be working with some of the local herbalists in lamu for our workshop.
